The mission of “Shelter From The Storm” (SFTS) is to provide transitional housing and support services to the homeless.”
In the nine years since its inception in 2005, SFTS has developed an effective program for families needing temporary shelter, financial and employment education, and access to specialized support services.
SFTS is a 501(c) (3) organization with over fifty active volunteers, a Life Coach, and an Executive Director. Since 2009 SFTS has been able to help over 50% of the homeless in our area.
Guests are asked to save 30% of their income with the goal of maintaining their own housing and rejoining the mainstream community. Guests agree to participate in a support services program to reach this financial self-sufficiency. The expectation is that they will move on to independence within six to eight months with extensions possible. We understand that each family has their own unique situation. Some families will be able to rotate out of our program earlier, some later.
SFTS has served forty-two at risk families who utilized five of our fully furnished apartments from January 2008 through September 2014.
