NAMI New Hampshire

NAMI NH envisions a future where people affected by mental illness and suicide have hope, help, and health, and are able to:

  • Access the supports and evidence-based treatment necessary for recovery;
  • Have a lifespan that is not cut short by suicide or co-occurring conditions; and
  • Reach their full potential, living in their communities free from discrimination.

NAMI NH is a medium-sized organization committed to improving the lives of all Granite Staters affected by mental illness and suicide through support, education, and advocacy. NAMI NH has forty years of service to individuals and their loved ones affected by mental illness and suicide, offering statewide activities which provide education, training, and support to individuals, families, and communities. The organization promotes advocacy and provides empowerment at the individual and family level as well as at the systems level by offering training and opportunities to build confidence in advocacy and leadership skills. NAMI NH has 50+ staff, 200+ volunteers, and a budget approaching $5.5M. NAMI NH's staff and volunteers are flexible, hard-working, and passionate individuals who go the extra mile to ensure the mission is achieved. Last year support, education, and advocacy was provided to over 40,000 individuals and families affected by mental illness and suicide. The organization was the recipient of the 2019 Nonprofit Impact Award from the NH Center for Nonprofits. NAMI NH has experienced tremendous operational growth in the past three years.

NAMI NH ensures that its five guiding values are embedded in its programs and actions. These values enhance our daily work and support our mission:

NAMI NH's strategic plan, updated in 2021, has four goals:

  • We will Advocate for Public Policy and Systems Change to hold the systems accountable through policy, advocacy, and measurement, as well as by further activating our volunteers and by increasing communications capacity.
  • We will Update Educational and Support Programming in order to increase access to up-to-date, evidence-based/evidence-informed, equitable programming delivered in multiple modalities to the families, individuals, professionals, and others impacted by mental illness and suicide.
  • We will Incorporate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion through changes to our governance, to our programming and operations, and through awareness, education, inclusion, and engagement.
  • We will Support Operational Capacity Building in response to organizational growth through measures to support workforce efforts, maintain financial sustainability, adhere to governance practices, and maintain operational plans.

NAMI NH’s recently renovated offices occupy two beautiful historic buildings in Concord and are within walking distance of the New Hampshire State House. A micropolitan area, Concord is home to 44,000 residents and features a vibrant downtown, robust healthcare services, and a low crime rate. New Hampshire is an appealing place to live, work, and play. It is widely recognized for its outdoor recreation and beauty, including the White Mountains, Lakes Region, and Seacoast. The Granite State is well known for strong educational opportunities, no income tax, and easy access to other areas of New England including Boston, MA, Providence, RI, and Portland, ME.

Like mental illness and suicide, NAMI NH is non-partisan. We support policies that help people with mental health conditions and their families and collaborate with diverse stakeholders on shared goals to improve the lives of individuals affected by mental illness and suicide.


Position Summary

NAMI New Hampshire (National Alliance on Mental Illness, hereafter NAMI NH), is a mission-driven and team-oriented organization seeking an Executive Director (ED) candidate to lead and support our organization's staff and volunteers to improve the lives of Granite Staters and their loved ones affected by mental illness and suicide. As the principal administrator for NAMI NH, the ED is appointed by and reports to the Board of Directors. The position supports all aspects of the organization's programming, operations, and long-term health through vision, leadership, relationships, and operational execution.

The ED ensures the organizational operations and programs of education/training, advocacy, and support are provided with the highest quality. The position maintains the existing fiscal integrity, stability, and the ongoing growth trajectory of NAMI NH. The ED provides leadership, empathy, support, and understanding of lived experience to staff and volunteers to enable them to effectively carry out their assigned responsibilities. The role serves as the leading statewide voice/spokesperson for mental health and suicide prevention. The ED will continue to support NAMI NH's 501(c)(3) status by complying with all required laws and related activities while operating in a non-partisan manner.

Requirements:

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong interest and passion for NAMI NH's mission, those it serves, and its staff and volunteers.
  • Master’s degree in human services or related field, or a Bachelor's degree with equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of ten years of senior level experience in administration and management.
  • Lived experience with mental illness/suicide and an understanding of the processes needed to reduce stigma while also working towards individual or family recovery and empowerment.
  • Experience in working effectively with a Board of Directors and grassroots volunteers.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain a strong team of dedicated staff and volunteers who have the right combination of skills, experience, and passion to further the NAMI NH mission.
  • Capacity to build new and strengthen existing donor relationships.
  • Experience in program development, delivery, and management of programs for those persons with serious mental illness and experience with suicide prevention programs and practices.
  • Ability to establish, cultivate, and maintain effective and robust working relationships with grassroots volunteers and people with lived experience with mental illness and suicide and their loved ones.
  • Ability to maintain existing and develop new, effective and productive working relationships with funders, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Experience in public policy advocacy, development of legislative initiatives, and working with and within diverse coalitions and partnerships. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely in written form and oral presentation.
  • Experience in the development and management of grants, contracts, and fundraising.

Responsibilities:

Specific Responsibilities

Through the following responsibilities, the Executive Director (ED) will act to assist NAMI NH in advancing its mission. The ED shall:

  • Provide overall leadership for maintaining a positive workplace culture for staff and volunteers that results in a team that is appreciated, supported, and collectively dedicated to the highest quality work to serve Granite Staters and their loved ones affected by mental illness and suicide.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with foundations, donors, businesses, government officials, and other non-profit partners.
  • Be accountable to the Board of Directors (BOD) for staff development, attaining specific diversity, equity, and inclusion goals, volunteer engagement, achieving growth targets, fundraising, and the financial success of the organization.
  • Ensure that the organization is well represented in public policy forums, such that its mission, goals, and objectives are understood by key stakeholders and public policy leaders, and decision makers. Toward that end, the ED will ensure NAMI NH maintains effective bi-partisan relationships with government officials.
  • Work to continuously improve NAMI NH's program evaluation and its impact on statewide, national, and international programs and supports.
  • Provide information and recommendations to the BOD and its Committees regarding policies and programs to be implemented in keeping with affiliate, family, and individual needs. The ED will share information with the BOD and its Committees regarding funding sources and market readiness.
  • Help develop, curate, and implement the NAMI NH strategic plan with affiliates, volunteers, and staff.
  • Assure that NAMI NH continues to follow the requirements of the Charter Agreement standards of excellence with NAMI National.
  • Assure that appropriate and efficient organizational policies and procedures in all operational domains are developed, implemented, and maintained consistent with all applicable Federal and State regulations.
  • Be expected to work some evenings and weekends in order to attend board meetings, support public policy matters, and represent the organization at internal and external public events. In-state travel and some national travel is required.
