Vice President, Operations

Upper Valley Land Trust

The Upper Valley Land Trust, established in 1985, helps people conserve land in 45 towns in New Hampshire and Vermont. We engage people in the vision and process of land conservation and in the stewardship of conserved lands. We provide conservation leadership, tools and expertise to permanently protect the working farms, forested ridges, wildlife habitat, water resources, trails and scenic landscapes that make the Upper Valley a special place to live.

The Vice-President for Operations is a senior-level employee responsible for administrative operations and financial management including: operational and fiscal planning, budget management, investment management; human resource management, benefits administration and organizational development; facilities management; information systems management. Also, the Vice President for Operations provides support to the Development Committee and the President in implementing the fundraising plan. The Vice-President for Operations supervises the Office Manager and Programs Director and arranges and oversees contracted services for accounting, payroll, janitorial, grounds and technology maintenance. As a member of UVLT’s senior management team, the Vice President for Operations participates in all organizational planning, development and assessment efforts.


Bachelor’s degree in business or other appropriate discipline, with MBA or MPA desirable, plus eight to ten years of relevant technical and management experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

  • Broad based knowledge and skills related to all areas of administrative, programmatic and fiscal responsibility, including fund accounting budget planning and management, information systems development, fundraising and human resource management, as well as knowledge of non-profit standards and practices and land conservation programs and techniques.
  • Proven planning, organizational, administrative, personnel, fund development and budget management skills.
  • Strong writing, math and analytical skills.
  • Microsoft Office with strong proficiency with Excel and/or other standard business systems.
  • Experience working with volunteers and committees, proven ability to organize, support and lead successful teams.
  • Ability to represent UVLT and to deal effectively with a wide range of individuals and organizations inside and outside of UVLT. Good formal and informal negotiating skills. Good public speaking/presentation skills.

Operational and Financial Planning

  • Coordinate development and execution of Annual Operating Plan. Confer regularly with staff to assist with difficult or unusual tasks, resolve problems and the like.
  • Coordinate operational and fiscal planning functions, including multi-year business plans, specialized project budgets, cash flow planning, and program costing.
  • Maintain and coordinate fiscal management policies and systems: liaison between third party accounting service provider, the organization and Board to ensure timely and accurate reporting of UVLT’s financial position; maintain budgets, subsidiary ledgers, contracts, vendor files; administer restricted grants and gifts as appropriate.
  • Assist the Treasurer and Finance Committee: arrange / coordinate / participate in annual audit, review and maintain schedule of banking relationships, insurance coverage and investment performance reports.

Human Resources and Organizational Development

  • Administer human resource management and organizational development functions, including personnel policy development and update, salary and benefits administration, personnel records systems. Plan staffing needs. Interview and hire staff.
  • Plan a variety of ongoing staff development and teambuilding programs to enhance technical competency and team effectiveness.
  • Develop, implement and administer recordkeeping and reporting systems designed to provide UVLT with data needed to make effective qualitative and quantitative assessments of all UVLT programs.
  • Provide administrative support for Board of Trustees; maintain organizational calendar; arrange Board orientation and development; maintain organizational policies, plans and archives.


  • With the President, coordinate Annual Fund planning functions, including plans and assignments for member contact and donor stewardship. Provide timely reports to the President and Development Committee; assist in evaluation of fundraising strategy; assist with fundraising correspondence and case materials.
  • In conjunction with fiscal planning, assist in developing goals and strategies for major gifts, planned gifts, corporate and foundation support and membership development.
  • Plan, support and supervise the work of the Programs Director to organize events and activities in support of member recruitment and retention.

Management of Facilities, Systems and Captial Equipment

  • Plan and oversee maintenance of building, grounds and equipment; develop and implement plan for capital purchases including software and communications systems.
  • Supervise front office functions; provide staff training and orientation to office equipment and procedures; oversee office calendar.
  • Implement protocols for document management, including file sharing; maintain the security of electronic records; ensure adequate fireproof storage on site and implement procedures for securing records daily at the close of business; Oversee the routine disposal of documents according to UVLT’s document retention and disposition schedule.
