Plan NH

Plan New Hampshire (Plan NH), The Foundation for Shaping the Built Environment, a 501(c)3, was founded in 1989. It is an independent organization of and for NH communities and the planners, designers and builders who shape them.

Plan NH has a vision of healthy and vibrant communities across the state. To achieve that, its mission is to “foster excellence in planning, design and development of New Hampshire’s built environment.” This mission is guided by Smart Growth and other principles including, but not limited to:

  • Walkable neighborhoods and town centers
  • Supporting local economies, including by leveraging natural and historic assets
  • Choices in places to live and how to navigate
  • Stewarding green space and natural features
  • Citizen engagement and participation in community decision –making

The Executive Director will be responsible for the overall management and direction of the organization in accordance with its vision and mission. The Executive Director provides oversight and overall management, planning, vision and leadership for all aspects for Plan NH including programs, finance, fundraising, membership growth, communications, community relations, and board development. The Executive Director works with the Board and Board Committees to establish vision, policies, strategic focus, priorities, new initiatives, and general scope of programs. This position reports to the Board of Directors.


  • Salary based on experience
  • Paid time off: Accrual of fifteen days per year plus specified Holidays

Job location: Remote with PO Box located in Portsmouth

  • Bachelor Degree; Master’s a plus
  • Passion for Plan NH’s mission
  • Strong communications skills
  • Demonstrated success building relationships, with communities as well as partner organizations
  • Demonstrated success with fundraising, donor cultivation and development
  • Experience working with board of directors
  • Experience in planning events in-person and virtual

Applicant must reside in the State of New Hampshire.

  • Works with and reports to the Board of Directors to ensure Plan NH operates with a clear mission.
  • Develops annual budget with input from Committees, monitors income and expenses and works closely with Finance Committee
  • Oversees fundraising with support from Fundraising Committee, secures sponsorships for events, invoicing, NH Gives and Giving Tuesday
  • Oversees marketing with support from Marketing Committee, press releases, newsletters, event announcements and website logistics
  • Oversees programs with support from Program Committee to develop rich content driven topics, event management whether in-person or virtual and complete credit application forms
  • Grow and retain the membership
  • Maintains annual policies with insurance providers
  • Develops and maintains relationships with numerous leaders and organizations across the state for mission-related collaboration and partnership
  • Organize community Charrettes with support from Charrette Committee through the Plan NH application process.
  • Oversee Plan NH Merit Awards with support from Selection Committee, record and process submissions, organize Awards presentation event

ED is Program Director for Municipal Technical Assistance Grant (MTAG), funded by New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority (NHHFA) which gives grants to communities that wish to expand housing options through zoning changes.
