Development Manager

Concord Community Music School

The Concord Community Music School serves more than 1000 individuals each week with educational and therapeutic services, age six months through 96 years, through its educational programs, public events, and community partnerships with human service, healthcare, and education partners.  An exceptional faculty of 50 teaching artists teach and perform classical, folk, jazz and world music.

Celebrating its 36th anniversary this year, strong community support has made possible the School’s success, with 50% of its $1.6 million annual budget contributed by individuals, foundations, businesses, and government agencies.   Recognition, through highly competitive national awards, has come from such major funders as the National Endowment for the Arts, Jane’s Trust, and the Kresge, Hearst and Wallace Foundations. Other awards include an ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, the Dunfey Award for Excellence in Management, the Non-Profit Business of the Year Award from Business NH Magazine, the Champion for Mental Health Award from Riverbend Community Mental Health, and the Governor’s Arts Award for Cultural Access Leadership.

The Development Manager supports and manages a comprehensive annual giving program with direct mail campaigns, donor and funder communication and support, and management and growth of the Music School’s database of students, donors, alumni, audience members, and prospects.  Within this responsibility for donor records, the Development Manager is an important member of the financial reporting team, with a key role in the annual audit.

As a member of the management team, the Development Manager works closely with the Board of Trustees and the President, Director of Administration, Director of Finance, Dean of Students & Faculty, and Registrar to achieve stated goals and implement programs.  As a leadership team, they advance external relations, a positive organizational culture, and the mission of the Music School. Significant recent progress in the Music School’s Sustainability Campaign for capitalization has made possible planned growth in external relations staffing, of which this position is central.

The Development Manager is a salaried, exempt employee who reports to the President & CEO. A part-time Development Associate supports and reports to this position.  

  • At least five years of experience in development, including significant work with multi-year donations and grants; the Music School uses Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge and Financial Edge.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office suite, internet research, and social media.
  • Valid driver’s license and personal vehicle or access to a reasonable alternative is required.
  • A background in cultural or educational organizations is a plus.

Core Competencies and Personal Qualities:

The ideal candidate will enjoy meeting deadlines and working both independently and with creative colleagues in a fast-paced environment.  They must be highly organized and able to manage multiple details with an exceptionally high degree of accuracy.  A confident, friendly attitude and ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive donor and student information is essential.  A willingness to pitch in and help in a variety of situations, a sense of humor, good judgment and common sense are all leading attributes of this position.



  • Grow and manage the integrity of the Music School’s database of constituents, including prospects, audience members, student families, alumni, and former and current donors.
  • Produce multiple direct mail and electronic appeals annually for unrestricted giving from individuals, with appropriate segmentation of lists.
  • Coordinate and document development activities, including annual solicitations, stewardship activities, final grant submissions and tracking of cultivation activities.
  • Formalize a moves management system, building upon 37 years of strong relationship building.
  • Oversee database, inclusive of data entry, gift processing, gift acknowledgements, and reporting, working closely with the Development Associate.
  • Ensure that all corporate, foundation and government grants receive proper acknowledgement and documentation and receive the recognition and reporting that they expect and require.
  • Generate reports, reconcile financial records, and provide data analysis to the President, Director of Finance, and the Board.
  • Formalize an Alumni Program with new and strengthened connections with alumni, developing communication tools to encourage alumni support and involvement.
  • Work with other staff to produce special events such as the Performathon and annual donor recognition events that raise visibility and strengthen relationships.
  • Provide foundation/corporate/government grants assistance:   assemble online and hard copy grant attachments, format attractive materials, handle online application processes, etc.
  • Assist with staff and trustee donor visits, providing scheduling, background, and needed materials.


  • Work as a member of the communications team of the Director of Communications, Publicity Manager and President to produce electronic and print communications.
  • Contribute content and ideas communicating impact and mission for a wide range of Music School communications and publications.


  • Work with colleagues as a leadership team to advance organizational goals and a healthy organizational culture, as described above.
  • Together with the Director of Finance, work to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting of contributed income for monthly reports and the annual audit.
  • Support the Governance Committee of the Board.
