Associate Director of Communications and Marketing

Holderness School

Located amid the lakes and mountains of central New Hampshire, Holderness School is a traditional co-ed independent secondary school, serving grades 9-12. Holderness strives to strike a balance in fostering the resources of the mind, body, and spirit: the mind through a challenging college preparatory curriculum; the body through outdoor activities and required interscholastic athletics; and the spirit through school and community service and affiliation with the Episcopal Church. Holderness remains by choice a small school where everybody plays an important role, and where students, faculty, and staff maintain close personal relationships.


The Associate Director of Communications and Marketing is one of Holderness School’s chief storytellers.  The primary focus of this position is creating content, managing projects, and upholding the Holderness School brand in collaboration with the Communications Team and the strategic direction of the school. The Associate Director is a highly visible position and works to capture and share the most authentic expression of the Holderness experience across a range of audiences.


This position requires an individual who is flexible and comfortable in a dynamic environment. It is important that this role engage in all aspects of the school and develop an awareness of the culture and day-to-day life of the school. Creativity, a desire to collaborate, strong organizational skills, and an empathetic professional demeanor are essential for this position.  


This position reports to the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications.

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, or relevant discipline;

  • 5-7 years of relevant experience in communications, publications project management, marketing, and/or public relations, preferably in an educational setting;

  • Demonstrated excellence in writing and storytelling, with strong editing, proofreading, research, and interviewing skills;

  • Proven ability to develop and write compelling content for multiple audiences and platforms, including print, online, and digital;

  • Strong understanding of photography and/or video production;

  • Strong technology skills and familiarity with layout/design software, web content management systems, and social media platforms;

  • Ability to work some nights and weekends as school events and deadlines require.


Content Creator


  • Writes, edits, and produces communications including blog posts, news articles, major print publications, and handbooks;

  • Strategizes and creates the school’s print and electronic communications in coordination with the Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications;

  • Works with the Digital Marketing Strategist to provide updates and content for social media outlets;

  • Oversees the work of graphic designers, print vendors, and other partners in the production of print and digital materials;

  • Documents the life of the school through photographs and video;

  • Maintains and organizes the Communications Team photo and video archive.


Editor of  Holderness School Today


  • Determines the overall theme and supporting content in coordination with the Head of School, Director of Strategic Marketing and Communications, as well as other stakeholder offices;

  • Solicits, edits, and organizes content;

  • Oversees the work of contributing writers, graphic designers, print vendors, and other partners;

  • Reviews, proofs, and fact-checks all copy.


Project Manager 

Projects may include publication development, photo/video production, research, website development projects, and special events.

  • Partners with Admission, Advancement, and programmatic offices to produce communications materials including brochures, posters, stickers, and invitations;

  • Produces the annual Report of Appreciation in coordination with the Advancement Office;

  • Coordinates production schedules and deadlines and troubleshoots and remedies any related issues;

  • Manages a prescribed budget relative to assigned projects and may participate in annual budget development by summarizing, researching, and analyzing past expenditures;

  • Supports the training, scheduling, and delegation of work to other staff members, interns, student workers, and temp workers/volunteers.
