The Joan G. Lovering Health Center provides sexual and reproductive health services for men and women.  These services include well woman gynecological care, contraceptive care, sexually transmitted disease and HIV testing and treatment including PrEP, reproductive health education and counselling, and first trimester abortions.  We accept most major insurances.  We also have a sliding fee schedule and accept Medicaid patients. If you are an energetic, mission-focused individual who would love a multi-faceted leadership position in nonprofit healthcare delivery, you may be who we are looking for.

The Joan G. Lovering Health Center (JGLHC) is a sexual and reproductive health services provider located in the Greater Portsmouth NH area. We have a long and valued history of being at the forefront of sexual and reproductive healthcare and reproductive health justice advocacy. Along with this long history comes a strong community of supporters, donors and advocates. Our Executive Director works together with our Board of Directors and staff to assure the provision of medically excellent first trimester abortion care, well women preventive services, contraceptive care, sexually transmitted disease and HIV testing and treatment, and reproductive health counseling and education services. The right person will have at least 5 years experience in administration or program management in a healthcare setting to assume our strategic, financial, public relations and advocacy, and operations leadership role. Prior experience working with a nonprofit governance board and with fundraising is required.

Located in Greenland NH, right off of Route 95, JGLHC is 10 minutes from Portsmouth NH, a beautiful seacoast city brimming with lively arts venues and restaurants. The ocean is minutes away.  Boston and the White Mountains of NH only an hour away.

This is a full time, exempt, benefits-eligible position.  The position will be open until filled.


Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, Public Health, Social Work.  Comparable experience and Bachelor’s Degree will be considered
  • At least 5 years’ experience in administration or program management in a healthcare setting.
  • Prior experience working with volunteer boards of directors desired.
  • Experience in fundraising.
  • Familiarity with non-profit organizational management.

  • Ability to address clients, donors, board members, staff and volunteers in a cordial and efficient manner.
  • Familiarity with and/or ability to learn and retain clinical terminology and use appropriately. 
  • Ability to deal with hostile or irrational persons and emergency or potentially threatening situations.
  • Comfortable in computer environment. Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
  • Understanding of fundraising databases, Electronic Health Records desired.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Quick Books and basic bookkeeping a plus.
  1. General Summary

The Executive Director is responsible for the smooth operation and functioning of the Joan G. Lovering Health Center. The primary responsibilities are to maintain quality medical services, a healthy financial status, good staff morale, and to implement the current strategic plan of the health center.  The Executive Director represents the organization as its chief executive officer in all dealings with other organizations, individuals and the general public and has the authority to bind the organization through her/his signature.

  1. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

Strategic Leadership:

  • Assesses sexual and reproductive health needs in the community and suggests appropriate responses to the board of directors.
  • Develops short-range (one-year) operational goals for the organization.
  • Develop new programs or expand existing ones; set organizational goals; as defined by our mission statement and strategic plan.
  • Develops, together with the board of directors, a Strategic Plan for the organization; monitors plan implementation and provides related reports to the board of directors.


  • Assists the board of directors in assuring the financial health of the organization by generating program revenue through fees for services, grant writing, fundraising, and identifying and maintaining relationships with trusts and foundations.
  • Create the budget, oversee financial management of organization accounts, including payroll, financial statements, insurance coverage, and government requirements.
  • Signs or directs the signing of contracts necessary for internal operations such as equipment leases and maintenance agreements, contractual employees, collaborative relationships with other healthcare providers and insurances.
  • Lead fund development, support the board in fundraising.
  • Facilitate transfer of appropriate information to Treasurer of the Board; assist with financial reporting.
  • Oversee current grants, research and submit new grant proposals, and oversee all reporting to grantors.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with individual, government, foundation and corporate funders.
  • With the board, meet or exceed revenue goals and help the BOD ensure adequate funds are available to permit JGLHC to carry out its work.

Public Relations and Advocacy:

  • Oversee health care, community education and/or advocacy programs.
  • Manage public, media and community relations.
  • Represent JGLHC in the local, state and national health care and pro-choice communities.
  • Represent JGLHC in professional associations and/or memberships.
  • Maintain awareness of and involvement in state and national reproductive and sexual health justice issues.


  • Provides an annual report and other reports, as requested, to the regarding progress toward organizational objectives, financial status of the organization and other issues of concern to the board of directors.
  • Assures orientation and training of the board of directors together with the board president.
  • Leads the board in visioning and planning.
  • Leads the board in their fundraising role.
  • Keep the Board informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors that influence it.
  • Provide support to board committees.
  • Maintain board records.
  • Functions as the liaison between the board and staff.
  • Any other tasks as needed to achieve the primary goals of the position and the goals of the health center.

Human Resources:

  • Oversee human resources, administration and programs. Participate in team and staff meetings with the goal of improving communication, efficiency, effectiveness, and performance.
  • Provide oversight/support for staff, encouraging personal growth and job satisfaction.
  • Recruit and retain capable staff, physicians and advanced clinicians.
  • Assures mandatory staff training and opportunities for professional development.
  • Hires, evaluates and supervises all staff. Directs all staff in the performance of their duties.
  • Directs administrative staff in their assignments and duties.  


  • Assure that all appropriate legal, insurance, security and medical requirements for the operation of a non-profit ambulatory reproductive healthcare facility are met. Assure compliance with all regulations, laws, licenses, and annual inspections. 
  • Ensures the Center has appropriate technological, legal, security and clinical and office resources and equipment.
