Operations Director

NH Humane Society

New Hampshire Humane Society is a private animal welfare organization located in Laconia, New Hampshire providing shelter, care and comfort to over 1,300 animals annually. The animal shelter has been in operation continuously since 1907 and is dedicated to caring for companion animals providing safe harbor, behavioral and medical rehabilitation and ultimately a loving forever home. The agency is funded entirely by donations from private donors and businesses that are aligned with the mission. 

Primary Role:  Manage the shelter, its staff, and the flow and care of animals through it, from intake to final disposition.  This includes intakes from strays, surrenders, and transports.

Reports to: Executive Director



•      Formal training in animal care

•      At least 5 years of full time experience in all facets of animal care

•      At least 2 years of demonstrated management/leadership experience

•      Ability to work at a high level in a collaborative environment

•      Ability to effectively interface with the public

•      Excellent ability to communicate verbally and in writing

•      Willingness to respond to organizational needs and animal crisis outside of usual business hours.

•      Computer literacy and ability to manage animal care databases.

•      Able to bend, pull and lift 40 pounds


Specific Responsibilities:

•      Hire, supervise, train, and evaluate animal care, adoptions, and reception staff.

•      Schedule Animal Caregivers, Adoptions Counselors, and Receptionist.

•      Plan and manage transports in collaboration with the Medical Director.

•      Oversee all intake including strays, surrenders and transports.

•      In collaboration with the Medical Director, assure that animals receive necessary care and treatment.

•      Ensure volunteer coverage and engagement in collaboration with the Volunteer Director.

•      Manage the foster care program in collaboration with the Volunteer Director.

•      Assure the safety of animals, shelter staff and volunteers; develop and manage all safety incidents and incident reports; sit on Safety Committee.

•      Manage all animal training and enrichment activities.

•      Assure the daily adherence to all animal care and safety protocols.

•      Assure that the total shelter environment is clean and welcoming for visitors and staff.

•      Collaborate with law enforcement and contracting towns/cities to perform cruelty and neglect investigations.

•      Oversee inventory of shelter supplies and order through Finance Director when necessary.

•      Develop and implement new programs to ensure Best Practices in Animal Sheltering and Welfare.

•      Develop and maintain Operating Manual including documentation of shelter policies and operating procedures.

•      Assure compliance with relevant regulatory agencies.

•      Prepare annual shelter operating budget in cooperation with Finance Director; work to ensure that budget targets are met.

•      Compile and publish monthly all statistics relative to animal intake/outcome, euthanasia, spay/neuter compliance, etc. and enter in shelter management database.

•      Assist with fundraising and events as needed.

•      Other responsibilities as assigned.
