Visitor Services Manager

McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center

The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is an air and space museum centrally located in Concord NH, dedicated to NH space pioneers Christa McAuliffe and Alan Shepard. Our mission is to inspire every generation to reach for the stars, through engaging, artful and entertaining activities that explore astronomy, aviation, Earth and space science.

The McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, detail-oriented person to join our Leadership Team as Visitor Services Manager. Your work will encompass the full visitor experience, from ensuring that our guests feel welcome, safe, and well-treated, our facility and grounds are in great shape, our museum opens and closes on time, our museum store is well stocked and profitable, and our reservations and financial transactions are handled correctly and efficiently.

This position is full-time and involves some night and weekend work. While this is a management position, it also involves direct service to the public.


An associate’s degree or higher is preferred, but your demonstrated capability through work experience matters the most. General Summary:

The Visitor Services Manager oversees the visitor experience at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center, including daily operations, facility rentals, retail store operations, membership & volunteer management and facilities and grounds maintenance. 

Essential Functions and Basic Duties

  • Manage all Discovery Center visitor services, including selection and supervision of staff; development of and adherence to visitor services policies and procedures; front desk and telephone reception; reservations and ticketing; facility opening and closing; cultivation and orientation of new visitor groups; office support; facility security; and evaluation of the visitor experience. 
  • Manage the Discovery Center facility rental program, including development of and adherence to rental and events policies and procedures; cultivation, orientation and stewardship of facility rental clients; scheduling; staffing; management of contractors; room set-up and breakdown; and evaluation of the facility rental experience.
  • Manage the Discover Center retail operation, the Science Store, including selecting, purchasing, pricing, displaying and managing inventory for resale at the Science Store and ensuring adequate staffing.
  • Oversee the Discovery Center’s volunteer program, including supervising the membership & volunteer coordinator’s efforts to recruit, orient, place and supervise volunteers.
  • Oversee the Discovery Center membership program, including supervising the membership & volunteer coordinator’s management of the member/donor database, and his/her efforts to grow the membership program while retaining current members.
  • Ensure compliance with Discovery Center and Payment Card Industry standards in handling of cash, checks, credit and debit cards and transactions by Visitor Services Team members.
  • Work with the Education & Development Team leadership to ensure adequate staffing of Discovery Center events and programs.
  • Communicate facility maintenance issues with the Discovery Center’s business manager to ensure that facilities and grounds are clean, attractive, safe; and that buildings and grounds systems are in good working order.
  • Complies with all Discovery Center policies and applicable local, state & federal rules and regulations including, but not limited to, health and safety policies and all civil rights laws.
  • Other duties as assigned.
