The Sustainability Mindset

Even with hope on the horizon, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc on nonprofit business models. Leadership must perform a delicate balancing act between delivering exceptional impact and remaining financially viable while making strategic decisions to survive. This two-part virtual workshop supports these efforts using the matrix map – a visual depiction of the organization’s business model encompassing the dual-bottom line of mission impact and financial viability.  We’ll review the steps to create the map and learn how to use this map to create a shared understanding of the business model and explore the integration of the organization’s impact and financial strategy.  More than just a picture, though, the matrix map also offers strategic guidance to strengthen the organization allowing organizations to inclusively make decisions and move toward sustainability – even during a pandemic.

About the Presenter

Steven Zimmerman, CPA, MBA is the Principal of Spectrum Nonprofit Services where he provides training and consulting in the areas of finance and strategy for community-based organizations, foundations and government agencies throughout the country. Steve is a co-author of two books on nonprofit sustainability published by Jossey-Bass, The Sustainability Mindset: Using the Matrix Map to Make Strategic Decisions with Jeanne Bell of CompassPoint published in 2014 and the best-selling book Nonprofit Sustainability: Making Strategic Decisions for Financial Viability with Jeanne Bell and Jan Masaoka of CalNonprofits published in 2010.
