Preventing and Responding to Complaints of Harassment in the Workplace

Harassment in the workplace is a common complaint of employees and creates a liability for your nonprofit. The key to the prevention of unlawful harassment in the workplace is education and training. In this program, Margaret (“Peg”) O’Brien, Esq., Chair of the Labor & Employment Practice Group with Devine, Millimet & Branch, PA will review the law regarding unlawful harassment, as well as best practices to address it and minimize legal liability.

Topics will include:

  • Information on the number and types of charges filed at the EEOC;
  • Defining quid pro quo sexual harassment;
  • Defining hostile work environment harassment;
  • Examples of actions that may create a hostile environment in the workplace;
  • Risky subjects and conduct in the workplace that should be avoided/prohibited;
  • Creating an effective reporting/investigation process for all employees;
  • Personal and professional consequences of mismanagement of workplace harassment;
  • Review of the right of employees to be free from retaliation; and
  • Importance of implementing equal employment opportunity and harassment policies and educating employees on same.
