Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter (NSKS) seeks a contract grant writer for approximately 40 hours a month who shares our commitment to meeting the basic needs of individuals and families in crisis and helping them achieve financial security and stable housing. 

In partnership with the Director of Development (DOD), the grant writer will:
• Gain an understanding of NSKS, its mission and programs, and work with key members of the NSKS community to monitor funding needs;
• Research corporate and foundation prospects as well as state and federal funding opportunities that align with NSKS’s fundraising priorities, identifying new sources of support in addition to working to continue to engage past donors;
• Write, edit, and submit competitive applications and proposals for funding and/or letters of interest, and manage the collection of all required documentation in accordance with each funding organization’s preferences following each organization’s/funders’ guidelines;
• Track funding opportunities, proposal requirements, status of funding requests and grants awarded or declined, deadlines, reporting requirements, and ongoing relationship development activities with funding sources;
• Keep abreast and notify senior leadership of changing state, federal, and private foundation grant standards and proposal guidelines;
• Working with the DOD, organize meetings with appropriate NSKS staff to gather information needed to fully understand a project or program for which funding is being sought; 
• Work with Director of Finance and Administration to review the budget of a project or program and make recommendations to best present it to funders;
• Keep in contact with the funding organization during the review of a submitted application or proposal and, if needed, supply additional supportive material;
• Write and submit progress reports to funders when required;
• Develop boilerplate proposals on various funding priorities that may then be adapted, establishing a library of resources;
• Participate in development team meetings as needed.
Basic Knowledge and Skills
• Possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, and writing skills
• Strong prospect research skills 
• Capacity to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently and with strict attention to detail
• Ability to interpret nonprofit financials and budgets for various purposes
• Ability to maintain a positive working relationship with NSKS staff and prospective donors 
Minimum Qualifications
• BA/BS degree required 
• Minimum of 2 years of experience as a primary writer and editor in development of federal, state, and/or private grant applications for community-based organizations as evidenced by writing portfolio and history of funding success
• Experience with expanding grants program
• Knowledge of and ability to research grants electronically and through print sources
• Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, Powerpoint, and experience with databases 
• Proven ability to apply a strategic mindset to the task of identifying and pursuing new funding sources
Additional Information:
• This is a contract position.
• This is a remote position however the ability to participate in occasional in-person meetings is a plus.
