Nonprofit Leaders Connect with New Senate Leadership

Nonprofit leaders gathered for a discussion with Senate President Donna Soucy and Senate Majority Leader Dan Feltes on January 7 as part of the Nonprofit Capitol Exchange series.

The Senators spoke of their intention to preside in a manner that allows all voices to be heard and strives to find common ground amidst differing points of view. Key issues raised during the discussion included the mental health system, child services, and the reimbursement rate for providers.

The Senators encouraged the nonprofit sector to continue raising its voice. Reflecting on his time as an advocate, Senator Feltes urged nonprofit leaders not to be hesitant when it comes to advocating for issues you really care about as long as you remain diplomatic. Senator Soucy advised advocates to take the time to understand why a policymaker who has voted against your issue in the past has formed that opinion. She suggested that often education can help them to recalibrate their thinking.

The Nonprofit Capitol Exchange is a series of meetings hosted by the NH Center for Nonprofits where nonprofit leaders gather to discuss the challenges, opportunities, and news of the day with some of New Hampshire's most influential people. The next Capitol Exchange program will feature Speaker of the House Steve Shurtleff on February 5.
