The Importance of Nonpartisanship for the Charitable Nonprofit Sector

Several days ago, the Johnson Amendment was brought into the national spotlight by President Trump. The amendment, passed into law in 1954, prohibits 501(c)(3) nonprofits from endorsing or opposing candidates for political office or engaging in other partisan activity.

Political neutrality is one of the great strengths of 501(c)(3) nonprofits. It allows (c)(3)s to focus on their mission, exercise issue oriented expertise and provide services to the community without political bias.

The NH Center for Nonprofits joins the National Council of Nonprofits and similar organizations around the country in opposing the repeal of the Johnson Amendment. We will use our voice to ask policy makers that we not create politically affiliated nonprofits.

We will continue to promote nonpartisan mission related advocacy in the nonprofit sector and work to preserve a nonprofit sector that functions as a community problem solver and serves the public good.
