Development Associate

New Hampshire Historical Society

Founded in 1823, the New Hampshire Historical Society is the fifth-oldest historical society in the nation and one of New Hampshire's leading cultural organizations. It is the only institution devoted to saving, preserving, and sharing all aspects of New Hampshire’s history. 

The Society has saved and preserved the most extensive collection of archives, objects, books, and research resources related to New Hampshire history that can be found anywhere. Headquartered in Concord, the Society uses its vast collections and resources to serve thousands of adults and children each year through its library, museum, website, publications, exhibitions, public programs, and extensive youth and school educational programs.

The Society is an independent nonprofit organization that receives no financial support from state government. It is financially strong and has a statewide membership.

The development associate performs and implements varied development activities and operations to achieve membership and annual fund goals, strengthen relationships with members and donors, attract new members, and increase funding. Works with and supports a development team that includes the vice president, president, board development committee, staff, and volunteers.

Requirements:
  • Trustworthy, energetic, reliable, friendly, and flexible.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality and accuracy.
  • Excellent customer service, organizational, and communications skills, particularly the ability to write in a concise, engaging, and persuasive manner.
  • Strong initiative, and the ability to work independently, while also having enthusiasm for working collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Solid knowledge of Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge software preferred; experience with other donor management software considered.
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of nonprofit development office experience.
Responsibilities:

Gift Processing

  • Manage gift receipt, processing, and acknowledgement.
  • Track pledges and produce payment reminders.
  • Manage development department files, electronic and print.
  • Identify members and donors requiring additional acknowledgment and stewardship, and make recommendations to the development team.

Appeals & Communications

  • Assist with the planning and implementation of new and continuing strategies for membership acquisition and retention, annual giving, and other fundraising campaigns (e.g., annual raffle, etc.).
  • Develop members/donor prospect lists.
  • Draft solicitation and other development-related materials (letters, brochures, forms, social media posts, etc.).
  • Organize and process all solicitations for annual fund, business membership, and other fundraising campaigns.
  • Manage distribution of print mailings and other communications to donors, members, board, and other constituencies.
  • Maintain inventory of development/administrative printed materials and supplies.

Database Management

  • Perform varied tasks in Raiser’s Edge, the Society’s membership/donor database (e.g., gift entry and processing, record updates, appeal creation, queries), and monitor the work of those who use the database.
  • Create complex queries and requested lists from Raiser’s Edge.

Reporting & Auditing

  • Prepare donor lists for annual report and other recognition.
  • Prepare and analyze fundraising reports including membership growth, renewal rates, giving trends, and attrition.
  • Recommend and implement new methods and refine existing methods to increase membership/donor renewal and recruitment results.
  • Assist in the preparation of and reporting for grants.
  • Assist with budget preparation related to development.

Other

  • Participate in the planning and implementation of membership programs and events (annual meeting, exhibition openings, trustee reunion, etc.)
  • Conduct donor research.
  • Monitor merchant/vendor accounts and service contacts such as Raiser’s Edge, USPS, Constant Contact, printers, etc.
  • Support the board development committee, including the preparation and distribution of meeting notices, agendas, and minutes.
  • Supervise volunteers and provide guidance to other development/administrative staff as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
