Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter

The Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter is dedicated to providing shelter and food to those in need.  The overall objective of the agency is to advocate, create and operate programs and services that promote dignity and self-sufficiency for those we serve.  To ensure that basic needs are addressed, the NSK&S is committed to joining with others in a community-wide ethic of caring.


The Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter a multi-service agency serving homeless families and individuals. We are seeking compassionate, professional individuals with experience working with low-income/homeless persons to provide direct care at our emergency shelters.

There are two part-time positions open plus a relief (on call) position.  One part-time position is 7 hours on Saturday (5:00pm – 12:00am).  The other part-time position is 12 hours on Friday (6:00pm – 12:00am) and Saturday (6:00pm – 12:00am).  The Relief position is on an as needed basis and may not result in a weekly paycheck.

Support staff are responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and well-functioning environment for the clients staying at the shelter.

Requirements:

Qualifications include:

  • Knowledge, understanding, and experience in working with low-income and homeless persons.
  • Ability to set limits, enforce rules, diffuse crisis situations, and use good judgment and initiative in problem solving are considered essential in performing the duties of this position.
  • The ability to work with people of differing socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds is mandatory.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to read, write, and speak English.  Bilingual Spanish helpful but not necessary.
  • Must be able to stay awake during entire shift.
  • May occasionally need to lift and/or more up to 25 pounds.  Must be able to climb stairs.
  • Must also be flexible and have a sense of humor.
Responsibilities:

General responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist new clients into the shelter by completing an intake and then providing guidance to the person/people staying at the shelter regarding expectations during their stay.
  • Complete and email daily census forms; make daily call to administrative offices with bed count.
  • Assist with the cleaning and preparation of rooms for incoming clients; wash and dry linens.
  • Ensure clients maintain and clean personal spaces plus common areas of the shelter.
  • Conduct daily rounds of shelter.
  • Complete Incident Reports.
  • Provide verbal and written reports to incoming staff at change of shift.
  • Attend staff meeting as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Shelter Manager.
