UST

Save on unemployment costs

Are you paying into the state's unemployment tax system?

How much could you save if you only reimbursed the state dollar-for-dollar for unemployment benefits paid out to your former employees?

Could you put the money you save to use in mission-related projects?

Can You Really Do That?

A federal law enacted in 1972 entitles 501(c)(3) organizations to opt out of their state’s tax-rated unemployment system and become a direct reimbursing employer. However, becoming a direct reimbursing employer on your own presents your organization with a couple of challenges:

  • Paying for claims immediately as they occur

  • Monitoring claims for inaccuracies

The Unemployment Services Trust can help you manage both of those challenges. UST provides nonprofits with a safe, cost-effective alternative to paying state unemployment taxes. UST members can save thousands through lower rates and expert claims monitoring.

Will it Really Save You Money?

Most 501(c)(3) organizations benefit from participation in UST. UST members typically save 50% off their unemployment taxes during their first two years of participation in the Trust, and many members continue to save approximately 30% each year.

To find out if your organization could benefit, call 1-888-249-4788, e-mail info@chooseUST.org, or visit www.chooseUST.org.

Board Self-Assessment Questionnaire

Assess Your Board's Effectiveness

The Board Self-Assessment Questionnaire allows nonprofit boards to assess their effectiveness in 12 aspects of governance, ranging from board-staff roles to external relations practices. This tool has been used by hundreds of boards and thousands of board members throughout the US and abroad since 2009.

The tool is now available as an online survey and the results are tabulated for you—replacing the previous process of tabulating by hand. The data is then put in a format that makes it easy for your board to begin analysis and assessment of key areas. While we typically only provide the tabulation without analysis, please email web@nhnonprofits.org if you're interested in consultation based on your results.

Pricing

Payment is required prior to the launch of the questionnaire. Effective July 1, 2016, the administrative fees for this service have changed.

Members of the Center Free
Not-Yet-Members of the Center < 35 Board Members* $89
35–100 Board Members* $139

Pricing is based on the number of board members participating in the questionnaire. For example, if your full board consists of 50 members, but you only want a committee of 20 to participate in the questionnaire, the price would be determined based on the size of the committee. For boards with more than 100 members or to discuss group rates, please email web@nhnonprofits.org.

The questionnaire itself is always available for anyone to download and self-administer for free.
