The
Newfound Lake Region Association is a member-supported 501(c)(3)
nonprofit organization committed to protecting Newfound Lake and its
watershed through education, cooperation and collaboration with the
nine towns touched by the watershed. The Association was founded in
1971 by inspired men and women dedicated to preserving the beauty and
values of Newfound Lake. Over the years, new members have joined and
contributed significantly to the organization’s health and well-being.
With the support of our 400-plus members, we continue to advocate for
the protection of Newfound Lake and its watershed.
The Newfound Lake Region Association is a program-oriented public
service organization committed to engaging everyone interested in the
balance between natural resources and growth. Some of our hallmark
programs include:
Water Monitoring:
- Lake
Hosts – Provide courtesy inspections and outreach to prevent invasive
plant species (e.g., milfoil) from entering the lake.
- Weed Watchers – Monitor native and non-native plant species to track near-shore lake health.
- Lake
Monitors – In partnership with the University of New Hampshire, 2007
was our 22nd consecutive year of deep lake water quality monitoring.
- Tributary
Monitors – UNH staff and six teams of NLRA volunteers have monitored 24
stream locations in 19 tributaries for the past 12 months;
Education:
Scientific on-site training of local students, campers and the general
public using skilled teachers and the NLRA pontoon boat;
Community Events:
The Naturally Newfound Fair, the Hebron Fair, Bridgewater Old Home Day,
the Newfound Rendezvous, the August BBQ and Blues Auction, informal
social
Public Meetings and Outreach:
Presentations cover topics such as land conservation, lake level
management, timber harvesting and gravel mining, and local wildlife and
habitat. We work with town boards, nonprofits and other like-minded
organizations to develop strategic partnerships; and
Communication:
Inform our members and the general public of upcoming events and
opportunities through our newsletter, website and mailings, and
regional media.
In July 2007, in partnership with UNH, Plymouth
State University, the Newfound Area School District, Jeffrey H. Taylor
& Associates and the NH Department of Environmental Services, we
began our most significant initiative ever. “Every Acre Counts: The
Newfound Watershed Master Plan” is a multi-year, leading-edge master
planning program for the entire watershed. The Newfound Lake Region
Association is responsible for directing the resources committed to
this program to where they are most effective and leveraging the
project team efforts to meet the long-term needs of the Newfound
watershed.
The Newfound Lake Region Association strives to be an
integral and useful part of our nine-town watershed community. It takes
more than a village to address our present challenges – it takes all
the villages!
