Mount Washington Valley Habitat for Humanity, through volunteerism and community involvement, builds simple, decent houses with and for our neighbors in need.
The affiliate was incorporated and granted affiliate status in 1994 with the mission of providing decent, affordable housing for low income families in Northern Carroll County, NH and Western Oxford County, ME. We own a ten acre parcel of land on the Kancamagus Highway in Conway, NH. This parcel contains 11 approved lots, on which eight have completed homes and one is currently under construction. We anticipate that one of the homes will be completed this spring while the remaining one will be ready for occupancy in the summer. The completed infrastructure includes underground utilities, water and sewerage. All that remains is to pave the road which is scheduled for the spring of 2009. The site is within walking distance of Conway Village with its schools, bank, post office, medical and dental offices, stores and other available services. We also provide support services which families require, helping them build the skills necessary to maintain successful homeownership. We provide an interest-free mortgage to hard-working families who need a hand up – not a hand out, and who otherwise might not be able to afford a home of their own.
The affiliate’s guidelines for prospective homeowners are that families have the ability to pay a mortgage, are willing to partner with MWVHfH, and are currently in substandard housing. Eligible families have a gross income of between $25,000 and $40,000 depending on family size. Construction costs currently are $60,000 to $70,000, largely as a result of our all volunteer labor force and favorable pricing from our suppliers who are also anchored in the local community by their businesses and residency. A chosen family pays as little as $1,250 as a down payment with an interest free mortgage, which is held and serviced by the affiliate. Participating family members are obligated to partner with the volunteers who build their homes by providing at least 300 hours of sweat equity on their own home or another Habitat project. They are also required to participate in training sessions on budgeting, home maintenance, and repair that are led by volunteer members of our organization and supporters. Through this training and other counseling, these families are able to achieve basic financial literacy and become contributing members of the community.
We are currently building our ninth Habitat home on Robert Morrell Drive in Conway, NH and searching for land in the Mount Washington Valley area to continue our mission of building homes for struggling families.
