The Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester

The Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester (MHCGM) is a 50 year-old private non-profit system of comprehensive mental health services that is available to Manchester area citizens who experience problems with mental illness, often with co-occurring substance abuse.  This year we will serve over 10,000 individuals, including 800 seniors and 2,000 children and adolescents.  We are designated as the community mental health program for Region VII (greater Manchester) by the NH Bureau of Behavioral Health.  In that capacity we provide a broad range of services to 3,600 people who have a serious and/or persistent mental illness.  We provide 24/7 emergency psychiatric response to the community.  We have a staff of more than 300 and operate over 30 programs.  We are the largest provider of outpatient behavioral health services in New Hampshire.

We have developed an international reputation as a center of excellence and have provided consultation to numerous other providers from at least 33 other states and 10 foreign countries interested in learning about the “Manchester Model”.  We have a research department that is involved in numerous ongoing studies, many of which are published.  We are affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School.  We operate The Cypress Center, a 16- bed acute psychiatric residential treatment program that serves as one of the three remaining Designated Receiving Facilities for adults in New Hampshire.

Our contract with the NH Bureau of Behavioral Health requires us to screen any person who presents for a psychiatric evaluation but they only provide financial support to meet the treatment needs of those persons who meet state criteria for severe and/or persistent mental illness. One of The Center’s programs, Bedford Counseling Associates (BCA), is an outpatient counseling and psychiatric medication service for about 5,000 area citizens who require psychiatric care for a range of conditions that have a disruptive impact on the quality of their lives but do not meet these state eligibility standards.  Many of those served at BCA are uninsured, underinsured or, for other reasons, lack the resources to cover the cost of the care they need.  We engage in extensive fundraising efforts in order to enable us to respond to all those in need regardless of their ability to pay.

Our mission is to provide an accessible, comprehensive, integrated, evidence-based system of mental health services that empowers individuals to achieve recovery and serves to promote personal and community wellness.

MHCGM, in collaboration with Elliot Health Systems and Catholic Medical Center, recently implemented a shared community-wide emergency behavioral health response system.

MHCGM is the only community mental health center in the region to offer naturopathic medicine  as a complement to more traditional mental health care for persons wishing to consider this natural, total-person wellness approach.
