The Granite State Zoo was incorporated as a NH nonprofit on May 4th, 2010. GSZ is a "new nonprofit with an 8-year history" in that we are building on the foundation created by our Executive Director's very successful (and now no longer active) privately-owned "Wildlife Encounters, LLC".
Based in Rochester, NH, the Granite State Zoo's existing facilities are home to approx 130 rescued, rehabilitated, confiscated or abandoned animals representing over 70 species of native and non-native wildlife. Constructed only to support outreach programming as has been provided by the former entity… our Rochester facility continues today to support the continued delivery of our "Wildlife Encounters" Outreach Services to schools, libraries and communities across NH and much of New England.
As a newly established entity, Granite State Zoo will not only continue to deliver our highly popular and professional outreach programming, but our mission now also includes the creation of a state-of-the-art and multi-faceted Zoo & Sustainable Living Center that will likely be located along the Route #16 north-south corridor in NH - ideally in the general Rochester area so as to complement the other amazing conservation-education entities that already exist in the region.
VISION: The Granite State Zoo is an organization working to promote respect for Earth’s biodiversity and the integration of healthy, sustainable living practices & technologies in all aspects of human existence.
MISSION: To increase awareness of the importance of biodiversity conservation, and to empower and inspire the public to make healthy, sustainable daily choices for themselves, their families and the natural world. Furthermore we will provide a high-quality, enriching and safe environment for animals in need of assistance, rehabilitation and long-term care.
In 2010, the Granite State Zoo will deliver an estimated 1700 public "Wildlife Encounters" presentations across Maine, NH, VT & MA. We will deliver over 200 visits in educational setting both private and public, enriching the learning curriculum and experience for tens-of-thousands of students in the region.
We would like to recognize our largest single customer / supporter - Canobie Lake Park in Salem, NH. They had us deliver nearly 300 public presentations at their facility in 2010, and their business has been essential in enabling the Granite State Zoo to get off to a strong start!
