McCain Discusses Impact of Nonprofit Sector

When asked at a recent town hall meeting, how the nonprofit sector has impacted his life, Presidential Candidate John McCain said, “Nonprofits have impacted the lives of a lot of my friends, especially the veterans. They have filled sometimes the void, in helping people with rehabilitation, physical therapy, with home ownership, and with a lot of things when, frankly, they had no place else to turn."

At the town hall meeting in Hooksett on December 4, NHCN Executive Director Mary Ellen Jackson asked McCain to describe his experience with the nonprofit sector and comment on ways he would strengthen the sector if elected. McCain went on to say, “So although the nonprofits have not directly affected me, they have certainly helped a lot of people I know.”

McCain continued by sharing his experience with the Salvation Army, when he stood with other volunteers ringing the bell after learning that a certain mall wanted to eliminate the ringing of the bell.

He thanked Jackson for representing the nonprofit sector and ended by saying, “I’ll do everything I can to encourage support, encourage volunteerism, to encourage Americans to serve their country, and one of the ways is nonprofits, whether it be Habitat for Humanity or any other organization, and volunteerism is obviously the heart and sole of it. As president, I’ll do everything I can because that’s the essence and spirit of America.”
