For an organization and its volunteers to benefit the most from each other, there must be a structure in place to manage that relationship. Volunteer management encompasses recruitment, screening, orienting, training, supervising and much more. This page includes readings and resources to shed more light on the complexity of this topic.

Value of Volunteer Time
Independent Sector has announced that the estimated dollar value of volunteer time is $20.25 per hour for 2008. This estimate helps acknowledge the millions of individuals who dedicate their time, talents, and energy to making a difference. Charitable organizations can use this estimate to quantify the enormous value volunteers provide.

The value of volunteer time is based on the average hourly earnings of all production and nonsupervisory workers on private nonfarm payrolls (as determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics). Independent Sector takes this figure and increases it by 12 percent to estimate for fringe benefits. Charitable organizations most frequently use the value of volunteer time for recognition events or communications to show the amount of community support an organization receives from its volunteers.

Learn more about these figures, including how they are calculated and how nonprofit organizations often use them, at http://www.independentsector.org/programs/research/volunteer_time.html

More to Give: Tapping the Talents of the Baby Boomer, Silent and Greatest Generations
This study looked at three generations - Baby Boomers, those who were born during the spike in birth rates, includes those born between 1946 and 1964 (currently ages 44 to 62); The Silent Generation, first referred to as such in a 1951 TIME Magazine article because of their place between comparatively revolutionary generations, includes those born between 1929 and 1945 (currently age 63 to 79); The Greatest Generation, who served in or supported the country through World War II, includes those born between 1901 and 1929 (currently 80 and older).  The report discusses both the potential for and the barriers to civic engagement and volunteering among these generations.

Charities Criticized for Falling Short When Screening Potential Volunteers
The Chronicle of Philanthropy features an article on a new report which looks at the way many social-service charities do not do nearly enough to screen volunteers, exposing the people they serve to potential victimization and the organizations themselves to liability, a new report says. The report, released by the National Center for Victims of Crime, in Washington, was paid for by a grant from ChoicePoint, a Georgia company that conducts background checks.
