It operates Discover Portsmouth and the John Paul Jones House, a national historic landmark. Open seasonally from April-December, Discover Portsmouth is open seven days a week from 10 am - 5 pm.

Description

The Portsmouth Historical Society in Portsmouth, New Hampshire is seeking a Volunteer Engagement and Program Assistant to run volunteer management and assist with public and education programming development, implementation, and staffing. The organization seeks an enthusiastic and engaged individual to join its team.  

 

This position is responsible for managing our established volunteer program and working with the Director of Community Engagement on all public and education programs.  The Volunteer Engagement and Program Assistant will report to the Director of Community Engagement. This position will also work closely with the John Paul Jones Site Manager and Welcome Center Manager to assess volunteer needs.

 

Responsibilities include: 

Volunteer Engagement 

  • Maintain and refine policies and procedures related to volunteers including, but not limited to, recruitment, onboarding and training.
  • Recruit volunteers and manage the onboarding and training process.
  • Create opportunities for volunteer recognition and professional development. 
  • Manage daily volunteer schedules, coordinate with staff to ensure volunteer coverage for events and manage all volunteer correspondence. 

Program Assistant 

  • Refine existing programming to maximize community engagement and revenue generation.
  • Research, develop and implement new programs with a focus on curriculum standards, collections and strategic plan alignment.
  • Assist with registrations for all programs including phone inquiries, email correspondence and online sign-ups. Act as point of contact and handle contracting for presenters.
  • Build relationships with local community and mission-aligned partners including local schools and other non-profit organizations 
  • With team, create a welcoming, inclusive, educational and seamless visitor experience for all who engage with Portsmouth Historical Society 
  • Assist with museum operations, as needed 

 

The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree and will have experience in innovative programming, education and/or working with volunteers. Excellent written and verbal communication abilities, effective organizational skills, and the talent to effectively manage multiple priorities are essential. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, enjoy working on a team, enjoy working with all ages including children, be comfortable with public speaking, possess computer literacy skills (Office, Zoom, GSuite), and be able to think creatively in all aspects of their work. Nights and weekends are required, based on the museum's program and event schedule. This position is part time, hourly at 20 hours per week, year-round, and is based out of the Portsmouth Historical Society in Portsmouth, NH. We are an equal opportunity employer.

 

Benefits: Portsmouth Historical Society offers paid time off, paid holidays, 12 week Paid Family Medical Leave, and a flexible work schedule to all part-time staff. Staff have the ability to work remotely in the off season (January - March).
