The board of directors of the Vermont Community Foundation (VCF) has chosen Stuart Comstock-Gay as the Foundation's next President & CEO.
Stuart has more than 20 years of experience in building the capacity, reach, and impact of institutions dedicated to bringing people together in the pursuit of community-minded goals. Stuart started his career at the American Civil Liberties Union in Washington, D.C. and in Maryland. He has served as vice president for programs, and then vice president and chief operating officer at the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, where early in his tenure he and his program staff distributed nearly $20 million in grants annually. Among his accomplishments at the Charitable Foundation, he launched and directed a high-engagement grantmaking program that included evaluation, management consultation, and ongoing financial support to several targeted partner organizations, some of which became national models.
He also served as the executive director of the Boston-based National Voting Rights Institute, which he helped merge with Dēmos, a national non-partisan research and advocacy organization based in New York City. Most recently, as director of the Democracy Program at Dēmos, Stuart worked to strengthen inclusiveness and democracy in the U.S. by reducing barriers to voter participation and encouraging civic engagement.
Throughout his career, Stuart has used community participation as a central theme in getting things done. It's a theme that resonates powerfully within the Foundation and throughout the communities it serves. Stuart arrives at the VCF at a time when its programs and services continue to grow the scope and the effectiveness of giving in the state - growth that is fueled by conversation, participation, and the sharing of ideas with charitable individuals, businesses, and organizations.
Stuart and his family will be relocating from Concord, New Hampshire, and he will begin working in Middlebury in late January. Shortly after his arrival, Stuart will start to make his way out into our communities to introduce himself, listen to your thoughts on philanthropy, and learn about your dreams for Vermont.
