Concord, NH – The Endowment for Health, New Hampshire’s largest health foundation, recently awarded more than $350,000 in Applied Research, Public Policy and Planning grants. Awards were made to 10 projects that promote health-related policies and activities in New Hampshire. Many of these projects have statewide impact while others address need in targeted geographic areas of the state.
“We are proud to support these grants, led by respected organizations who share our commitment to improve the health of New Hampshire’s people – especially the vulnerable and underserved,” said Mary Vallier-Kaplan, the Endowment’s vice president and chief operating officer.
The following grants were awarded:
Applied Research grant awards: • Children’s Mental Health in New Hampshire Schools ($62,625) – Research to be conducted by the New Hampshire Center for Public Policy Studies to enhance understanding of mental health service provision within New Hampshire schools.
Public Policy grant awards: • Advocating for Injured Immigrant and Refugee Workers ($10,000) – An effort led by the New Hampshire Coalition of Occupational Safety and Health to increase access to workers’ compensation medical benefits for injured immigrant workers. • Understanding New Hampshire’s Healthcare System: Structure and Finance ($55,775) – Policy and data analysis conducted by the New Hampshire Center for Public Policy Studies including ongoing monitoring of health system financing and new work on Medicaid provider payments.
Planning grant awards: • The New Hampshire Grants Institute ($11,095) – Development of a comprehensive grantwriting training program in New Hampshire by the Council on Fund Raising New Hampshire (CONFR) in partnership with the New Hampshire Center for Nonprofits. • Advancing Children’s Mental Health Care Within Youth-Serving Organizations ($15,900) – To improve the career development and retention of children’s mental health counselors. This planning effort is led by the New England Network for Child, Youth & Family Services. • Infant Mental Health: Planning to Improve Access and Mental Health Outcomes for Children ($69,421) – To improve outcomes for young children (birth to age six) and their families. The New Hampshire Association for Infant Mental Health will collect data and promote a plan for a cohesive, integrated system of mental health services founded on evidence-based practices. • Health Education/Youth Empowerment ($27,155) – To improve health and access to services and supports for African immigrant/refugee youth and their families. A needs assessment and strategy will be developed by the New American Africans. • Increasing Resiliency Through After-School Programs and Mental Health Centers ($21,802) – To create a comprehensive statewide plan to build resiliency and increase overall mental health in youth by enhancing after-school programming and creating linkages with community mental health centers. This effort is led by New Heights/Seacoast Mental Health Center. • Sullivan County Mobility Project ($12,930) – To plan and develop a Regional Coordinating Council under the State of New Hampshire’s transportation brokerage model and to launch the Charlestown Transportation Pilot. The Upper Valley Lake Sunapee Regional Planning Commission will host this initiative. • The North Country Child Psychology/Psychiatry Project ($75,908) – To increase the quality of children’s mental health care by leading a community-based work group made up of executive officers and providers. A model telepsychiatry intervention will be planned and piloted. The effort is led by Weeks Medical Center and will engage the school district, local primary care providers, public and private mental health clinicians, the family court, and child psychiatrists. The Endowment for Health was established in 1999. Since 2001, the Endowment has awarded more than 500 grants totaling $23 million to support a wide range of health-related programs and projects in New Hampshire.
