  Goodwill Industries of Northern New England Receives Federal Grant
Grant Supports Use of Technology to Promote Job Opportunities
Concord, NH - Goodwill Industries of Northern New England will promote virtual career exploration and opportunities in the health care field through a new federal grant. The U.S. Department of Labor announced the release of $14.7 million in health care career grants supported by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Goodwill Industries International is one of four grantees, which include the American Association of Community Colleges, the International Association of Jewish Vocational Services and SER-Jobs for Progress National, Inc. Goodwill Industries of Northern New England is one of seven Goodwill independent agencies that has received funding. The agency was granted $267,932 to use over the next two years.

The NH Food Bank’s Recipe for Success programs receive Catholic Charities’ USA Centennial Recognition Award
Manchester, NH - New Hampshire Catholic Charities has won a prestigious award from Catholic Charities USA for Recipe for Success, the outreach programs of the New Hampshire Food Bank. Recipe for Success was recognized for their comprehensive and innovative approach to reducing poverty in the community. New Hampshire Catholic Charities was one of three regional Catholic Charities affiliates to be honored with a Centennial Award.

  Call for Applications for the 2010 Corporate Fund Management Award
Applications for the 2010 Corporate Fund Nonprofit Management Award given in honor of Walter J. Dunfey are due August 1, 2010. An unrestricted cash award of $3,500 is given to the winners and will be presented at the NH Center for Nonprofit’s Leadership Summit on September 24.

Walter J. Dunfey was a noted New Hampshire businessman and philanthropist, who took the lead in establishing the Corporate Fund. He recognized that management in the nonprofit sector is among the most demanding and most important work in our society.

Every year, up to two nonprofits are recognized with this coveted award. Selection follows a rigorous application process and interview.

This partnership has become Giving Matters, a weekly nonprofit series which airs on Saturday mornings at 8:35 a.m.

  Community Caregivers Inducts Five New Board Members
Derry, NH - Community Caregivers of Greater Derry welcomed five new members to their Board of Directors in April. Caregivers, through a volunteer network, assist the elderly and disabled with services such as friendly visiting, grocery shopping, light chores, home repair and maintenance, and medical transportation.   NH Legal Assistance and Legal Advice & Referral Center Appoint New Officers and Directors to Boards
Concord, NH – At their annual joint meeting on May 12, New Hampshire Legal Assistance (NHLA) and the Legal Advice & Referral Center elected a new slate of officers and one new member to its board of directors. The officers are Mark C. Rouvalis, chair; Michael LaFontaine; president, Elizabeth M. Leonard; vice-president of NHLA; John T. Pendleton, vice-president of LARC; James D. Kerouac, treasurer; and James O. Barney, secretary. Jeanne P. Herrick was also elected to serve on the NHLA board of directors.

Governor John Lynch announced the next regional business outreach session will be held in Berlin on Friday, June 25 at 8:30 a.m. at White Mountains Community College. The outreach sessions are designed to directly connect New Hampshire businesses with state leaders and state services.   NH Charitable Foundation 2009 Annual Report Now Available
The 2009 annual report for the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation is now available on www.nhcf.org. More than 4700 awards were made to nonprofits and students between January and December 2009. By the end of December, total assets of the Foundation had grown to $425 million, bolstered by $30 million in contributions and an investment return of 19 percent for its combined investment fund. In addition to awards totaling $28 million, the Foundation leveraged its grant making by helping to bring in more than $16 million in public appropriations to the state. Highlights begin on page two of the report.

The Children’s Alliance of New Hampshire is pleased to welcome Erika Argersinger as its new full-time Public Policy Director. Erika has worked for more than 15 years to advance the interests of children at the local, state, and federal levels. Erika moved to Plainfield, New Hampshire with her husband a year ago and will join the Alliance on June 7.

  New Hampshire Association for the Blind Continues to Build its Board of Directors
Concord, NH - Michelle Arruda, Chair of the NH Association for the Blind’s Board of Directors recently announced the nomination of Sen. Bette Lasky of Nashua and Kathleen Hayes of Portsmouth to its Board of Directors. Sen. Lasky has served five terms as a state rep and was elected to the state Senate in 2008. She is a long-time resident of Nashua where she resides with her husband. Ms. Hayes is a commercial real estate finance manager with Ocean Bank in Portsmouth, NH. Most recently, Ms. Hayes joined the Association’s Seacoast Advisory Committee.

  Monadnock United Way Picks New Leader
Monadnock United Way has hired Kathy A. Harrington, a Keene resident and executive director of the Keene-based nonprofit Stonewall Farm. Harrington will not be new to the organization. She is the chairman of its allocations committee and vice chairman of its board.

 Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund Announces $1.3 Million in Grants
Concord, NH - The Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund, a donor advised fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, has awarded 34 grants totaling $1,320,563. Grants were awarded to organizations throughout northern New Hampshire and Vermont and the MRC of Coaticook in Quebec for economic development, conservation and sustainable forestry, education, basic needs and community safety net. Applications were submitted on October 1, 2009 and grant awards range from $4,000 to nearly $200,000.

 Winner of the Smith Award for Excellence in Service to Families Announced
On May 20 during a Family Services Celebration at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord, the New Hampshire Children’s Trust Fund/ Prevent Child Abuse NH awarded the prestigious Smith Award for Excellence in Service to Families to The Children’s Place and Parent Education Center (The Children’s Place), a family resource center in Concord. A $15,000 unrestricted cash reward was given to the winner. Over 150 people turned out to honor the Smith Award winner.
