The Boys of Mayhew – Giving Back to the Community

Pictured (L to R): John Adams, Community Outreach Worker, Mayhew; Mayhew program participants; and Patrick Tufts, President & CEO, Granite United Way.
Mayhew challenges and helps at-risk New Hampshire boys to believe in themselves, work well with others, and find their best.  Mayhew provides tuition-free programming to approximately 200 New Hampshire boys ranging from 10 to 17 years in age.  The majority of the boys are from low-income, single-parent families.

A boy’s first Mayhew experience is a 25-day, residential summer program on Newfound Lake.  A highlight of their summer is spending the “Mayhew Money” they earn during morning work hours at the “Mayhew Market.”  Boys can purchase pencils, stickers, harmonicas or they can save their hard-earned money to buy a t-shirt or sweatshirt.

Since 2009, Mayhew has presented the boys with an option of donating a portion of their work hour earnings to a local nonprofit organization.  This summer, over half of the boys contributed their earnings to this year’s selected non-profit.  Three boys from The Mayhew Program recently presented Patrick Tufts, President and CEO of the Granite United Way, with a check for $185.00 to help them create opportunities for a better life for all.

The Granite United Way is committed to investing in the areas of the community with the most critical needs - education and lifelong learning, physical and mental health and wellness and housing and economic self-sufficiency. By focusing on these investment initiatives, the Granite United Way is helping people in a new way; it is breaking negative cycles and tackling the root causes of problems to create lasting change. Because we all win when a child succeeds in school, when a family becomes financially stable, when people have good health.  To learn more about the Granite United Way, visit www.graniteuw.org.
