Program Assistant

Homeless Center For Strafford County

The Homeless Center for Strafford County (HCSC), founded in 1998, is a seasonal emergency shelter for women and families located in Rochester, NH.  Our mission is to provide safe shelter and professional case management to homeless women and families, helping them to achieve self-sufficiency.  The shelter is currently open to residents from the beginning of October through the beginning of May.  The shelter has six bedrooms and serves approximately 75 individuals from October through April each year.  The HCSC also operates three transitional housing units, which are available to qualifying families for a period of 18-24 months.  The shelter is staffed by approximately 45 volunteers and six (mostly part-time) employees.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Program Assistant provides general administrative support to the Executive Director and Case Manager.  The position also involves direct service with shelter residents, both adults and children.  The position is 15 hours per week, and the hours are flexible, with the approval of the Executive Director.  The position runs from the first Monday in October through the first Monday in May each year.

  • Assist the Executive Director and Case Manager with the day-to-day operations as delegated and instructed.
  • Be familiar with and stay current on Homeless Center policies and procedures, and maintain compliance with all.
  • Be prepared to answer resident and volunteer questions with regard to policies and procedures.
  • Follow, and be consistent in enforcing, the Homeless Center's resident house rules.
  • Follow, and be consistent in upholding, the HCSC volunteer guidelines.
  • Be familiar with HCSC policies for exiting residents
  • Be familiar with the procedure for reporting suspected child abuse
  • Work with Executive Director to schedule all volunteer and staff shifts.
  • Arrange for substitute volunteers as needed.
  • Keep Executive Director informed of any concerns or issues that may arise from, or between, volunteers, staff members and residents.
  • Conduct shelter intakes with new shelter residents.
  • Handle shelter donations and communicatiith donors.
  • Work directly with shelter residents as needed.
  • Bacherlor's degree or equivalent work experience in administrative support roles, or in the human service field.
  • Excellent knowledge of excel required.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
